For most people Ladakh is reminiscent of monks and monasteries. But for the curious explorer, there is so much more to Ladakh than just that. The lesser-known part of western Ladakh is a treasure trove of unique landscape and cultures - scenic alpine lakes, snowcapped peaks, big rivers, special wildlife, and ancient tribes and villages. Embark with us on this one-of-a-kind exploratory road journey through the landscape of Drass, Kargil, Suru and Zanskar as we track bears, explore villages, hike the mountains and stay in stunning locations and camp in the outdoors along the way - and experience the Other Side of Ladakh.

Day 01 - Arrival Srinagar

On arrival at Srinagar, our office representative will meet and greet you and transfer you to and transfer you to hotel.

(Srinagar, bewitches not only the tourists who visit here but every person who shares this beautiful land. It is called the city of lakes and the Venice of the East with snow laden great Himalayan Mountains all around. In the lap of these mountains lie the glittering lakes that are surrounded by houseboat and Shikaras and the majesty of Mughal architecture. Spread on both sides of the river Jhelum the city is famous for its natural beauty, gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats. The city is also famous for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dried fruit.)

Day 02 - Srinagar to Drass

After Breakfast, drive to Drass over the formidable Zojila pass also known as the “Gateway to Ladakh”. This scenic drive is the perfect introduction to the landscape you are about to experience over the coming days.

On arrival in Drass, Check in at Your Hotel.

You will be received by your host and naturalist. Post lunch, rest for some time and if time permits head out for bear sightings in the evening. Later, join in for a talk session about the bears in the area and the conservation work they have been doing with the local community.

Day 03 - Bear sightings, Mushkow river walk

After breakfast, we will head out for bear sightings in our base valley and return to the hotel for breakfast.

During the summer the entire Mushkow valley is in bloom with a variety of flora and fauna with over numerous types of wild flowers, birds and butterflies that flock to the region. Post breakfast, take a guided walk along the Mushkow river to explore the natural landscape. End the walk with an outdoor lunch by the river. Return to the hotel and rest.

In the evening, head out again for a session of bear sighting. Later in the evening, high tea and talk session by Maninder Kohli / documentary screening followed by dinner. BLD

Day 04 - Drive from Drass to Panikhar (3400m/11000ft) enroute Kargil Heritage Tour

After breakfast, we will drive to Suru valley via Kargil. Although it came into prominence after the infamous Indo-Pak conflict of 1999, Kargil’s history goes well beyond it to the times of the Great Silk Route. Kargil was a thriving trade town on the Trans-Himalayan trade route between India and Central Asia.

Once in Kargil, visit the 300-year-old settlement of Hundurman (now in ruins) along the Indo-Pak LoC which is home to the Unlock Hundurman - Museum of Memories, a unique community museum that preserves the Purigi heritage and war history of this frontier settlement.

Take a guided tour of the museum and sit for lunch at a local home and sample traditional Kargili cuisine. Post lunch, join Muzammil for a tour of their family museum, the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum, that houses over 1000 artifacts from the Silk Route trade period between late 19th to early 20th century for an insight into the lesser-known history of Kargil.

Day 05 - Lago La hike

Lago La is a 4100m high saddle point between Panikhar and Parkachik village. From this vantage point, you can enjoy super panoramic views of the Nun Kun massif, the Parkachik glacier and the entire Suru valley.

Early morning, we will drive to the road head from where the hike will begin. Its steep ascent for about 2 hours through green meadows up till the top of Lago la. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee/tea here with jaw dropping views in the backdrop.

Return to the campsite and spend the evening by the bonfire and relishing a trout barbeque which is a specialty of the region. BD

Day 06 - Drive from Panikhar to Padum (3700m/12150ft) over the Penzila pass (4400m/14400ft)

After breakfast, continue driving to Padum. Stopover at the Rangdum monastery, StaTso LhangTso twin lakes at Penzila top, you will also be able to witness the Drang Drung glacier. At more than 20 kms in length, surrounded by the Zanskar range of mountains it is the longest glacier in the Indian Himalayas (outside the Siachen range).

Enjoy a coffee break at Penzila pass.

Arrive at the hotel by afternoon. Post lunch at the hotel and quick rest, drive to Karsha Monastery for a guided tour which is about 20 minutes from Padum. Karsha is the biggest and the most important monastery of Zanskar with ancient rock carvings at the site.

Return to the hotel for high tea and a talk session by a young local, Lobzang Wangtak who is a water conservationist, climate activist and a filmmaker. BLD

Day 07 - Padum to Kargil Via Suru Valley

After leisurely breakfast, drive back to Kargil via Suru Valley.

Enroute visit Sani situated about 9 km from Padum, is a typical Zanskari village, peaceful and quiet with a few Ladakhi styled houses and even fewer people on the roads. Here visit Sani Monastery – the gompa is built to accommodate an ancient chorten 6 m (20 ft) high and of unusual shape, known as the Kanika Chorten, is presumed to date back to the time of the famous Kushan emperor, Kanishka.

Sankoo 42 kms away from Kargil, also known as "Ladakh's own Gulmarg".

Day 08 - Kargil to Srinagar, enroute Sonamarg

After breakfast, leave to drive back to Srinagar enroute visit Sonamarg. Situated at an altitude of 9000 Ft. Sonamarg is also called as “The meadow of gold” has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh River that meanders through the valley abounds with trout and mahseer. Stop at Sonamarg for Photography/tea.

On arrival in Srinagar, check in at your hotel.

later in the evening have a shikara ride. If time permits go for heritage walk in the old city of Srinagar, or visit Nishat Bagh- “The Garden of pleasure”- It is second largest Mughal Garden on the eastern side of Dal Lake, representing the zodiac signs and offer splendid views of the Dal Lake and rectangular layout in Persian style garden architecture from East to West direction housing a few Mughal buildings.

Day 09 - Departure Srinagar

After breakfast, leave for Srinagar airport to board your flight back home.
