Spread on both sides of the river Jhelum the city is famous for its natural beauty, gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats. The very absence of order in the location of the houses and their tumbled down appearance add a peculiar charm to the scenery. This historic Gurdwara was constructed in sacred memory of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who visited Mattan Sahib in 1517 during his third Udasi (Missionary Travel) and stayed here for thirteen days. During his stay, Guru Nanak Dev ji held a spiritual dialogue with Pandit Brahm Das, a distinguished Sanskrit scholar of the time. Pandit Brahm Das, proud of his vast scriptural knowledge, brought books from the Bijbehara Hindu University of Religious Education to support his views. Through this discourse, Guru Nanak Dev Ji conveyed his divine message, which is recorded in the Assa ki Vaar (on page 467 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji). The Gurdwara at Mattan Sahib thus holds immense spiritual and historical significance for the Sikh community and for the cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir.
